What a beard trim includes

The length is evened out so the beard keeps its shape. The cheek line and the neckline are set, and the mustache is cleared off the lip. Then the edges are finished so it all reads as one clean outline.

Where the neckline goes

Too high and the beard looks like a chin strap; too low and it runs down the neck. A good guide is a finger or two above the Adam’s apple, curving back toward the ears. Leo adjusts it to your jaw.

How often

A short beard keeps its lines for about two to three weeks. A longer one can go a little longer between trims, as long as the neckline is kept clean.

Clippers or scissors

Both. Clippers with a guard even out the bulk quickly and keep the length the same all over. Scissors take care of what a guard cannot: stray hairs, the mustache over the lip, and the shape of a longer beard at the chin. The lines themselves are finished with a trimmer or a blade.

Between visits, at home

Keep the neckline, nothing else. Find the line a finger or two above the Adam’s apple and only clean what grows below it. Leave the cheek line and the shape of the beard alone: one pass too many there and it takes weeks to grow back.

Trim it dry. A wet beard looks longer than it is, and what seems like a small cut ends up shorter than you wanted.

Growing it out

The first month is the hardest: it grows unevenly and looks untidy. That is exactly when a clean neckline and cheek line help most. They make a beard in progress look intentional, without taking any length off the beard itself.

What does it mean to trim a beard?

To even out its length and set its lines — cheek, neck and mustache — so it keeps a clean shape as it grows.

What is a good beard trim?

One where the length is even, the neckline sits a finger or two above the Adam’s apple, the cheek line is clean and the mustache clears the lip.

How much is a beard trim in Miami Beach?

With Leo, beard shaping is $20. Around North Beach, listed beard trims ran from $23 to $50 when we checked.

How often should I trim my beard?

About every two to three weeks for a short beard; a little less often for a longer one.

Can you trim a beard with hair clippers?

Yes, with a guard, to even out the length. The lines and the mustache still need a trimmer or scissors.

When should I trim a beard I am growing out?

Keep the neckline and cheeks clean from the start; leave the length alone for the first month or so.

Can I get a haircut and a beard trim together?

Yes. A haircut is $25 and beard shaping is $20; book both in one appointment.
